Answer
NWTC is a leader in creating, adapting, and adopting Open Educational Resources or OERs. These include open textbooks and other openly available resources (can be readily found or discovered), accessible (exist in a form which others can readily use), and reusable (faculty can easily modify if the license allows). Watch this 2-minute video on What is OER?
Students may see optional OER textbooks on their booklist when low-cost print copies are sold in addition to the free online access. They can also see these resources by:
- Browsing the list of all Wisconsin Technical College System OER textbooks (or searching the list for specific classes at NWTC)
- Reviewing NWTC's remixed and original OER textbooks on LibreTexts. Faculty can contact Kim LaPlante to ask for custom copies of any textbooks or chapters on the LibreTexts platform that they can edit to add to Canvas and sell in the Bookstore.
- Visiting the WISELearn statewide OER repository to see resources from all educational institutions (or see NWTC's page of resources)
For links to major OER collections, subject collections, open courses, textbooks, and more, see NWTC's Open Educational Resources Guide. A great place to search for Open Educational Resources is through the Creative Commons site.
