Admissions and Application Process

How do I apply to NWTC as an international student?

  1. Select a program.
  2. Complete an International Student Application.
  3. Submit required documents, including your passportproof of financesEnglish proficiency, and academic records.
  4. Once all items are submitted and approved, NWTC will issue your I-20.

What are the application deadlines?

  • Spring semester (January-May): November 15
  • Fall semester (August-December): June 15

Apply early - visa wait times vary greatly by country.

What is the application fee, and how do I pay it?

The non-refundable international application fee is $130, payable online when submitting the application.

Which programs are available, and where can I find course details?

NWTC offers programs in IT, Business, Engineering, Digital Arts, Health, Trades, and more. Visit the International Programs and Degrees website to learn more.

If you plan to study English first, you will still select the program you plan to pursue after you finish English classes.

Can I transfer from another U.S. school to NWTC?

Yes. If you are already in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, you can request a SEVIS transfer. You must stay enrolled and maintain status until your SEVIS record is transferred to NWTC.

English Proficiency and Placement

Does NWTC offer an English program?

Yes. NWTC offers an intensive English program for international students.

If you choose Intensive English on the application, you will apply to the program you plan to pursue after you complete the Intensive English program.

Which English tests does NWTC accept, and what scores do I need?

NWTC accepts:

  • Duolingo
  • IELTS
  • TOEFL (paper-based, computer-based, or internet-based)

Minimum scores vary by program. Students who do not meet direct-entry requirements may enroll in the Intensive English Program (IEP).

How do I take the English test?

You may take Duolingo at home or schedule IELTS/TOEFL at approved testing centers.

Upload your score report as part of your NWTC application. You will be required to take the MEPT when you arrive in the United States.

If my English is basic, can I still start at NWTC?

Yes. You can begin in the Intensive English Program, which offers three placement levels. Your starting level is based on your test score.

Are scholarships or funding options available for international students?

NWTC does not offer scholarships before you arrive. Once you are admitted to the College and living in Wisconsin, you can apply for NWTC Foundation scholarships, which typically range from $500 to $1,500 per semester.

What financial documents do I need for my I-20?

You must provide:

  • An official bank statement or bank letter showing the required funds
  • The NWTC Financial Statement
  • Sponsor documents, if someone else is funding your studies

Statements must be dated within 60 days of submission.

If my sponsor is paying for my studies, what do they need to provide?

Sponsors must complete the Financial Support form and supply a matching bank statement confirming available funds.

How much funding do I need to show?

You must demonstrate access to the full estimated cost of one academic year (tuition, living expenses, supplies, and insurance).

Visa Interview, I-20, & Status Changes

How do I schedule or reschedule my visa interview?

Use the U.S. Embassy/Consulate website for your country. Appointment availability varies. Book as soon as possible.

Can NWTC help me get an earlier visa interview date?

No. NWTC cannot influence embassy appointment availability.

Do I need a new or updated I-20 if my interview is after classes start or if I defer?

Yes. If your interview will occur after the program start date or if you want to begin in a later term, NWTC will issue an updated or deferred I-20 upon request.

What happens if my student visa is denied?

You may reapply for a new visa. NWTC can defer your start date and issue a new I-20 if needed.

Can I bring dependents (spouse/children)?

Yes. Dependents qualify for F-2 visas. You must show additional financial support to cover their living expenses.

Travel, Arrival, & Housing

When is the earliest I can enter the U.S. before my program starts?

F-1 immigration rules allow arrival up to 30 days before the start date listed on your I-20.

What housing options are available?

NWTC offers on-campus housing (subject to availability) and provides resources for locating off-campus housing. Move-in dates depend on the semester.

What happens after I receive my visa?

You will receive instructions for completing:

  • The Accuplacer or placement tests (if needed)
  • Class registration
  • Mandatory International Student Orientation

Is international orientation required?

Yes. Orientation is mandatory and typically occurs the week before classes begin.

Can I work on an F-1 visa?

F-1 students may:

  • Work on-campus (up to 20 hours per week during classes)
  • Apply for CPT after meeting eligibility rules
  • Apply for OPT near program completion
