Answer

There are two ways to insert videos into your PowerPoint presentation, Embed or Link.  (Note: Videos from the Library's Films on Demand subscription should be added as links, not embedded).

Decide which option works best for your purposes.

Is it better to embed or link a video in PowerPoint?

  • If you want to insert a copy of a video into the presentation, embed it.
  • If the video will be updated and you want to view the most recent video, or if you found the video online (such as on YouTube), create a link to the file.

Option 1, Embed Video:

  1. Open PowerPoint
  2. On the Slides tab in Normal view (found in View tab), click the slide on which you want to embed a video.
  3. In your browser, go to the web site that contains the video that you want to link to, such as YouTube, SlideShare, Vimeo etc.
  4. On the web site locate the video and click on Share and then click on Embed.

  1. Select and copy the embed code.
  2. In your PowerPoint presentation, click the Insert tab and in the Media Group click Video.
  3. Click on Online Videos.

  1. The Insert Video window will display. Paste the embed code you copied into the Enter the Address section, then click Insert at the bottom left of the window.

  1. Click on Slide Show tab, select Start from Beginning or Start from Current Slide to preview.

Note: Most web sites that contain videos include an embed code, yet the locations of embed codes will differ depending on each website. Some videos do not have an embed code.

Option 2, Link to Video:

       1. Open PowerPoint.

       2. Open the Internet and browse to the site you want to use a video from, like YouTube, SlideShare, Vimeo etc.

Locate your preferred video then click on the Share option. Then click on Copy.

        3. In PowerPoint on the Slides tab in Normal view, click the slide to which you want to insert the link to the video.

       4. Select on the Insert tab

       5. In the Media section, select Online Videos.

     6.  The Insert Video window will appear.

      7. Paste the link address you copied, then click on Insert, bottom right of the window.

      8. To Preview, click on the Slide Show tab, click Start from Beginning or Start from Current Slide.
