Competitive Application Process for Dental Hygiene and Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Admission to the Dental Hygiene program is a competitive process accepting 20 students annually. A committee meets twice a year (June and December) to rank applicants that have completed all admissions items.  Only the top candidates are selected for admission.

Candidates are ranked based on their scores on the HESI exam and their essay. Any applications received and/or completed after the deadline will be considered during the next ranking process. Candidates not selected are welcome to retake the HESI and apply to the next ranking.

Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Echocardiography program is a competitive process accepting 10-14 students annually. A committee meets twice a year (June and December) to rank applicants that have completed all admissions items.  Only the top candidates are selected for admission.

Candidates are ranked based on successful completion of all admissions requirements and their short answer responses. Any applications received and/or completed after the deadline will be considered during the next ranking process. Candidates not selected are welcome to retake the HESI and apply to the next ranking.

Apply to Semester and Program

Applications to enter an associate degree or technical diploma program are accepted from students who have, at least, entered their senior year in high school. Apply online. Paper applications or assistance with applying are available through contacting NWTC at 920-498-5444 or email start@nwtc.edu.

Start applying a year in advance! August 1st or first business day in August for fall semesters, June 1st or first business day in June for summer semester or January 1 or first business day in January for spring semester.

Your NWTC application requires you to choose a specific program for a specific start date (semester). Unlike 4-year colleges, technical college applications require students to "pick a major" before they apply. Each program, or "major", also has a specific start date.

What programs are available now?

Upon application you will be assigned an admissions representative from the College to assist you through your next steps. NWTC admissions will email the status of your application with instructions on your next steps and indicate who you can connect with for questions.   Please check your NWTC email regularly. If you have questions, contact the Admissions Office at start@nwtc.edu or text/call: 920-498-5444

Completed Application

Applications are accepted to the program or waitlist based on "date of completed application." The completion date is when all materials are received at NWTC and meet the admissions requirements. If your application is turned in on Monday, but the qualified academic testing and high school transcripts aren't received until Wednesday, the date of completed application will be Wednesday. Please note, some of our programs do have a competitive admission process. Please see the Competitive Admission Process for more details and a list of programs.

Fee Waivers

Fee waivers are available if the $30 program application fee or $10 certificate application fee are barriers to applying. Please contact admissions to discuss this option. Email start@nwtc.edu or call 920-498-5444.

First-come, First-served by date (not time of application)

Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are admitted to programs based on date of completed application, not time of application on a particular day. Please note, some of our programs do have a competitive admission process. Please see the Competitive Admission Process for more details and a list of programs.

Negative Service Indicator

Indicators are put on student records for various reasons. Applications will not be accepted from students who have negative service indicators that block registration at the time the application is submitted. Students are welcome to reapply after the indicators are satisfied and removed.

For more information on indicators, contact Student Finance at (920) 498-6816. Check my.NWTC to see if you have a hold on your account.

Out-of-State Applicants

Wisconsin Statute TCS 10 designates three residency categories for the order of admission to a program: District, Non-District State, and Non-State. Non-District and Non-State students are admitted on a space available basis after District students.

Paper Application Processing Fee

Paper certificate or program applications will require a $10 paper processing fee for each application.

Pre-Program Status

Some programs are entered as pre-program and applicants complete a 2-step process. For these programs, when the Step 1 Pre-Program To Do Items are completed, a student is officially accepted to the college as Pre-Program and has access to financial aid and priority registration according to course pre-requisites. Based on capacity in the program and courses, students are either offered a spot in the program or its waitlist after completing the Step 2 Program To Do Items. Some Health programs have a competitive admissions process and are not immediately offered a waitlist spot; see your Application Checklist for further details.

Program Pathway Limit

NWTC allows students to submit up to two applications. We encourage a student to meet with their admission advisor or career coach to narrow their program choice down and to only pursue one active WTCS Career Pathway.  If a student chooses to enroll in the highest credential in a pathway, they will automatically be admitted to the related certificate and technical diploma program/s in that career pathway during their first term of enrollment within the highest credential at the college.

A student can submit an email request to the Admissions department to be placed into more than 1 pathway. Admissions will review the request and notify the student of his or her status within 72 hours.

Readmission

If class attendance is interrupted for two or more consecutive semesters, students are asked to reapply to the program and meet the program's entry requirements at that time.

Exceptions are made for students serving in the military reserves or Wisconsin National Guard who have their attendance interrupted for active duty or during a national emergency.

Reciprocity Agreements

Any Michigan student who is a resident of Bay de Noc and Gogebic community College Districts and the counties of Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, and Delta may attend NWTC under a tuition reciprocity agreement. Students admitted under this agreement will pay $5.00 per credit in addition to the Wisconsin resident tuition rate.

Minnesota residents are considered Wisconsin residents for tuition purposes.

Residency Requirements

Students are considered in-state residents for admission and tuition purposes with one of the following forms of ID:

  • Wisconsin driver's license
  • Current rental or lease agreement with in-state address
  • Payroll stub showing payment of Wisconsin income tax
  • Wisconsin voter registration card
  • 1040 income tax return with in-state address

Students do not have to reside in the state for a certain period of time before they can be considered a resident. Admissions will contact the student if proof of residency is required.

Testing

NWTC has adopted a multiple measures approach that utilizes a variety of materials to evaluate a student’s academic progress for admission & course pre-requisites. NWTC will use a combination of high school or college GPA, and/or one of the following assessments: Accuplacer, ACT, TABE Level A, Compass or Assest to meet certain admission and course criteria. For program assessment requirements, please refer to your admission checklist within your my.NWTC student portal or view requirements on our program webpage. To help us determine your next step in the admission process or to enroll in courses, please submit an official copy of your high school and college transcripts.

Need to complete your testing yet? NWTC offers Accuplacer testing at most locations. Visit the Assessment Center website for hours and information on how to schedule an appointment.

Transfer Students

Students transferring to NWTC from another institution of high education will be considered for admission based on all submitted records. Transfer students will complete the online application found on our NWTC website.

Waitlists

NWTC is in compliance with Wisconsin Statute TCS10, which specifically addresses the use of Waiting Lists. When a sufficient number of applications have been received, processed, and accepted to fill the capacity of a program for that term, a Waiting List is established.
